Microsoft Word

The Ruler bar

The ruler bar is an invaluable tool.  It is used for visual cues, setting tabs and indenting paragraphs.

If it is not visible on your screen, either, your program is set to something other than 'page layout view' or the ruler has been turned off.  Take a look at your View menu option and verify the settings.
